Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis as a therapeutic technique. Some people see hypnosis as a mystical thing and associate it with stage shows or mind control. However, hypnosis is a natural state of mind. We go through this stage many times a day. A simple example is driving a car - you don’t realise that you have changed gears, used the indicators or turned the wheel and before you know it, you are already at your destination! The same thing happens when you are watching a movie and eating popcorn - you have no idea how you finished all your popcorn and how much time has passed! In other words, hypnosis is a shift of awareness from your normal conscious state.
So what happens during hypnosis? The human brain has two sides: the left brain, which is analytical and likes to structure and the right brain, which is non analytical and more intuitive. During hypnosis, the left brain is turned off. This paves the way for access to the subconscious mind. What is this? In order to understand the subconscious mind, we need to understand the conscious mind. The conscious mind is what we use most of the time, such as for thinking, reasoning and storing short term memories. The subconscious mind is beneath the conscious mind, where the permanent storage of memories, habits, beliefs, emotions and imagination that we experience through our senses takes place throughout every lifetime. It also takes care of our autonomic nervous system such as breathing, eating and things we do automatically. Then there is the superconscious mind that is opposed to altered states of sub-consciousness and consciousness. The superconscious mind encompasses a level of awareness that sees both physical reality we experience through our senses and also the energy and consciousness behind that reality. It is also known as the higher self or infinite self where soul memories are stored.
There are four different levels of Hypnosis: Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta.
Beta is the normal level of a conscious mind that we are in most of the time.
Alphais a mild daydream or light relaxation state which is used for suggestion therapies such as to stop smoking, stress management and weight loss.
Thetais the level where deep relaxation takes place. This is where the conscious mind is mostly switched off and the subconscious is working and releasing the memories from this lifetime or past lives. Individuals are taken to this state during age regression and past life regressions.
Deltais almost akin to being asleep: an extremely deep form of relaxation where the super conscious mind takes over. The individual is taken into the delta state in Life Between Life Regression.
Hypnotherapy is therefore taking the individual to one of the above brain wave states, depending on what therapy they want to work on, and following the instructions of their hypnotherapist. This helps individuals deal with a variety of different issues and make positive changes within themselves. The therapist only facilitates the individual’s experience.
There are two types of hypnotherapy: suggestion and regression. Suggestion is mainly used for therapies like to stop smoking, stress management and weight loss. Regression therapy simply means going back in in time. Regression is a powerful healing tool to explore repeating patterns, contracts, agreements, perceptions and beliefs that were formed sometimes on an unconscious level as a result of experiences from earlier in this life or past lives. Patterns normally occur from the time of conception to the age of seven in this current lifetime, or can be from previous lifetimes. Regression hypnotherapy is therefore used for going all the way back to the womb and past lives to access the information and events that have been recorded by our bodies, minds and souls.
